The Karate Kid is a film which is enjoyed by people of all ages even though there are two Karate Kid’s. There is the original which was first made in 1984, Is still adored by the majority of the population today and always will be to some people, the original seems to be favoured more by the older generations it’s something they had growing up with whereas the remake in 2010 caught many people eye. There was seen to be a lot of money to be made within the remake of this as Media Convergence can be made a huge role. Having the box office themselves brought in $359,126,022 and with the budget being $40 million, the remake didn’t do too badly. The box office total would not include the extra money that the distributor or the production company got for the media convergence as there would be the synergy side of it where items like DVD’s, T-Shirts, Posters, Stickers, Temporary Tattoos, CD Sound Track, and Kids Video Games each made their own large amount of money as it was so popular.
The original Karate Kid was released 13th August 1984 in the UK with a box office taking of $90,815,558 and distributed by Columbia Pictures and a director of John G. Avildsen who is well known and has directed many famous films which are well known by people all around the world such as Rocky and Rocky V. Within this film, there is no handheld camera work as it all runs smooth. It’s telling a story and the audience are watching the story of a child moving from one state to another. With Ralph Macchio playing the young boy Daniel, soon realises he doesn’t fit in to the California way and is soon cornered by several boys who have been taught karate by a teacher with a violent attitude. He seems to have talked his way out of many fights but this time was different as he was passing out as an elderly man has come to his rescue. This film has on edge scenes and is a great film for the family to watch. An original version of a film has a lot of value to the majority of people compared to a remake like the Karate Kid made in 2010. The storyline for both films are the same, as where each child doesn’t fit in to their new surroundings where their mother has moved them to. Then the two characters both get bullied and saved by older men who are wiser than them all. One difference between the two films which is more noticeable is the fact the 2010 have better effects and the technology has improved. The quality of the picture seems to be miles better and the actors within the film of 2010 are more remember able for today’s generation. Having the remake of the Karate Kid released so many years’ later enables DreamWorks to also release the original Karate Kid as it seems to be a classic to the majority of people. Seeing adverts for a brand new film makes them want to watch the original and can make the older generation who remembers it more, remember their possible younger days. The Karate Kid now has had a lot of success as Jaden smith who features within the film as the main protagonist is recognized by plenty of people and the younger generation enjoy watching this particular young actor as he is the son of the famous Will Smith. This would slightly help boost up sales as they would all of known him from starring in a film with his father, The Pursuit of Happiness (2006).
